Madonna or Kylie?

First, there was Madonna. They painted a huge image of her on a building on the corner of Broadway and Houston. She was wearing one her designs for H&M. Looking seductive and intense. It was an ad to promote her new H&M clothing line.

Madonna lived there on Broadway and Houston for about a month, and her designs filled all the H&M stores for that same month.

Then, one day, Madonna was gone. And in her place they painted a huge image of Kylie Minogue. She is wearing one of her designs for H&M. Looking seductive and playful. It is an ad to promote her new H&M clothing line.

Is this more significant than H&M refreshing it's clothing supply and tapping pop culture icons to sell them? Is it a sign of things to come? - old diva out, new diva in? Next month, will Kylie be replaced with Avril...?

My cell phone often gets lost in the sea of stuff that’s in my purse. Or sometimes I’ll leave it in a random spot in the apartment – like next to the cereal, or in my sock drawer. So the other night, when I thought I had once again misplaced my phone, I made Oliver play one of his favorite games, “Call Maya’s Phone So She Can Track Down its Whereabouts.”

Oliver dialed. And the call rang and rang but neither of us could hear my phone ringing. Finally a strange man answered it. His name, it turns out, was Harry.

Harry was the passenger who got into a cab on the Upper West Side earlier that night, right after I got out. Apparently I got out of the cab without my phone. I don’t know if he sat on my phone, or he just saw it there on the seat, all sad and lonely. But he took it home.

I’ve lost a phone once before. And I did not get it back. I don’t have facts, but my gut tells me 99.999% of the time when someone loses their phone, it is never returned.

So I was amazed that Harry answered. And not only did he answer, he was proposing ways for me to meet up with him so I could get my phone back: If I could come to his place of business the next morning, he could leave it with the receptionist.

I was even more amazed that that he actually tried to reach me well before I realized my phone was missing! He looked through my contacts and saw the one called “Mama and Papa.” He called them. Explained he found my phone, and would I mind calling my phone or his (he gave my mom his number) so that he and I could arrange a pickup.

Wow. Stuff like that doesn’t happen.

The next morning I went to his place of business, met Harry and was handed my phone, in a sealed envelope. He was a very nice guy and blushed a little when I handed him a thank you card (with a $20 gift certificate to Starbucks inside. Oh yeah. I’m classy.)

My favorite part of this story is that he handed me my phone in a sealed envelope. Inside it was my phone, plus a bunch of his business cards. Turns out he is a VP at one of the largest real estate firms in NY. (So I would venture to guess that his phone is nicer than my phone, hence one reason why he wouldn't want to keep it). But it’s the business cards that make me laugh. How random. But I guess anyone can become a potential client when you sell real estate. Thanks, Harry!

Oliver and I moved to Brooklyn this weekend! I'm very, very, very excited to be here. It's the top floor of a brownstone that's in really great condition. Compared to our Seattle place the apartment is quite small, but compared to NYC apartments, it's...almost medium.

Below are pics of the living room/dining room (though I only got the living room part) and the kitchen, which is cute and quaint.

One of the best parts of moving was being reunited with our things. We sold all of our furniture and put everything else in storage when we left Seattle, and our stuff sat in a container in some warehouse in Renton, WA for over a year. It's amazing what you forget you own in a year. It was like xmas every time we opened a box of things - there were boxes of books I forgot I owned, shoes I forgot I owned (I had no idea I owned so many shoes!), kitchen things I forgot I owned.

But probably the item I'm most excited to be reunited with is the last picture below - it's a bed cover that my parents got in 1977, in Rome, when were immigrating to the United States (moving from the Soviet Union, not Italy). I took it from them when I graduated from college and it's been with me ever since. It's golden and furry, and looks like wheat blowing in the wind during a summer sunset. Or, maybe it looks like what a really greasy single guy on the prowl for ladies would cover his black leather bed with. Or maybe it looks like Chewbacca exploded all over the bed.

It's so friggin kitschy, I can't get over it. My golden Roman bed covering.

I can't wait until we have a bed that I can cover with it!

I've been feeling cheated all winter. It was too warm, then it was too cold, but never did we have snow! One night a few weeks ago it snowed a measely inch or two overnight, but by mid-day the snow had melted away.

But last night it snowed for real! Still not the crazy winter storm I'd been hoping for, but something at least. Early morning the ground was kind of white, but by late morning things had turned grey. Tomorrow, everything will be dirty and sloshy and black. Unless it snows again tonight (please, please, please).

There is such an east coast/west coast difference with the sign offs that the journalist didn't even address. East Coast is "Best" everyone, all the time. And West Coast is "Thanks!" (notice the exclamation!) "Best" is so icky and unfriendly. "Thanks!" is so happy and encouraging. Yet those adjectives aren't how I would describe the people on the east vs west coasts.

The article didn't even mention "Thanks!"!

So to the journalist, I say, Best.

Hollywood's cutest kids. It's absolutely amazing to see all these names next to each other. Only two are normal (I guess Mathilda is reasonably normal, so make it three). I really hope these poor kids all go to school together, and only with each other. Otherwise, can you imagine how much crap they'd get from all the normal-named kids out there??

My little home office-slash-bedroom set up is great. It's a very sunny room with a big desk where I can spread out all my papers, sit comfortably at my laptop and enjoy the A/C. And when I get tired of making to-do lists and reading random crap on the web, I can take a nap on the bed.

My home office-slash-bedroom also has a nice radio. And the radio is set to my favorite NYC station: "102.7 Dance Hits!"- It's all dance hits all the time. But not terrible pounding techno beats. These are all fabulous, disco inspired dance hits from the 70s, 80s, 90s and beyond.

I am guaranteed to hear Donna Summer at least twice a day, which for me is just plain magical. She is probably the main reason** I love to dance so much, and her music certainly inspired my "technique" and most of the "moves" I still break out today at parties (believe it or not! most of my moves were invented by an 8 year old me ;).

When I was 8 I had two (vinyl!) LPs that I listened to all the time: Donna Summer's Greatest Hits and Disney Movie Soundtrack Songs (I still sometimes catch myself humming the Pinocchio theme song).

I spent every Saturday morning dancing my 8 year old butt off in the living room to Donna Summer's Greatest Hits. I did this with the Disney soundtrack, too, but that was kid music, so I grew out of it real quick.

Donna Summer made me feel like I was a Solid Gold Dancer! I choreographed whole routines to her songs. She made me want to wear sparkly clothes! Her music filled my heart with Dance. And when the LP got to the Barbra Streisand duet "No More Tears (Enough is Enough)" I thought I could go on dancing forever.

So far today I've heard some amazing classics: Sheila E. (Diamond Life); Prince (Little Red Corvette): Donna Summer (MacArthur Park); Madonna (Vogue); Cher (Song for the Lonely); Sister Sledge (We Are Family); Shannon (Let the Music Play)... and it's not even noon!

When Ms. Summer comes on, I do have to step away from my laptop and dance a little. The floors in my home office-slash-bedroom are wood, which, by the way, is a great surface to twirl and spin on.

* "On the Radio" is a Donna Summer song (wink).

** Donna Summer can't take all the credit. Never under estimate the power of rhythmic gymnastics.

I grew up in San Francisco, so I operate best in a moderate climate. Something that ranges from a pleasant 45 degrees to a pleasant 75 degrees.

Every place I've ever lived has also been relatively mild so I never quite realized that I am a sweater. If it is more than 85 degrees and more than 1% humidity, my body responds by sweating a lot. It's quite charming. People move away from me on the subway.

Yesterday, it was 91 degrees and one million percent humidity. I came this close ("") to buying one of those personal cooling units- you know, those plastic fans you wear as a necklace. They make them now in gold, with swarovski crystals running up the side of the fan, spelling the word, "loser." (I'm kidding).

It has been this hot for several days now. My other coping mechanism, aside from sweating a lot, is complaining a lot. That is also charming, as I'm sure Oliver would tell you.

But yesterday, when I came home, I found an a/c unit freshly installed in the bedroom (thanks Oliver and Rich!!). I was actually a little cold last night - I love it. Now, at 11:30am, it is a refreshing 60 degrees in the bedroom. I'm practically shivering.

Weather.com says it will be 10 million degrees today with a billion percent humidity.

I am never leaving my bedroom again.

I never know any good places to meet people. Usually, I'll make a plan to meet a friend in some part of town that's convenient for both of us, but I never have a suggestion for where exactly to meet. This site not only figures out for me the best subway trains to take to our meeting spot, but it also tells me all the cool bars near my ultimate destination. I use this thing every day! (for the subway info, not because I go to a bar every day). Try it out. It's kind of clunky at times but otherwise wonderful.

2. Weather.com

I check it all the time and will check their "hour-by-hour" feature every day. Maybe it's becauase I miss my weather app on my smart phone. But I love knowing what the temperature is supposed to be 4 hours from now.

The Funniest TV Show I've Never Seen on TV

I've been doing a lot of flying in the past few months, and I always seem to find myself on American Airlines. In fact, I just got off an AA plane last night - Oliver and I went to a wedding in Big Sur, CA (which I'd never been to and which was beautiful). But that's not the point.

The point is that AA seems to have exclusive rights to the best show that's not on TV, Out of Practice. I've never seen this show on TV. Didn't even know it existed until AA showed it to me several weeks back. Sometimes they'll play several episodes in one flight, and I always find myself cracking up throughout the whole thing. It's a comedy that stars Henry Winkler (the Fonz, and the lawyer on the late Arrested Development) and Stockard Channing (president's wife on West Wing and Rizzo from Grease!).

The bad news is the show just got cancelled!! Damn those TV networks! They always take the good stuff from me. American Airlines is the only way I know how to watch this show. Anyone know if I can get the show on DVD?

Book a ticket on AA if you need to fly and make sure to watch this show (but bring your own headphones, b/c AA charges $2 for their headphones).

Mobile phone blues

I got the mobile phone blues. I got 'em real bad.

I have a great phone: the Audiovox 5600. About a year ago I wrote a heartfelt blog entry proclaiming my love for her. (she is last year's model but I love her nevertheless.)

When Oliver and I embarked on our extended vacation we decided to turn off the phone plan entirely. There is no reason to pay $70/month for a service we won't be using for 2+ months, we reasoned.

Then we came back, and the very first thing we did, even before fully unpacking, was to set up mobile phone service. We decided to keep the same phones, but signed up for a pay-as-you-go monthly plan because we didn't want to be tied to a 2 year contract.

The pay-as-you-go plan only allows for voice. I get $70/month in phone calls. After each call a little message appears on my screen informing me of how much money I have left to spend for the month. We get text messaging with our plan, but it costs 10 cents to send and receive a message. MMS is $1.50. I consider this too expensive, so I effectively won't/don't use this service. We have no data plan (meaning, no web browsing, no ability to use cool apps, etc. )

The formerly fancy Audiovox 5600 is now just a regular phone plus all the solitaire and jawbreaker I can play.

So now I look at my phone and long for the past: reading news on the Yahoo News Mobile site when I was stuck in traffic, checking the weather in Seattle on the cool little weather app while deciding what to wear every morning, checking the traffic conditions on 520 on the cool little traffic map app as I would get ready to leave work in the evenings, taking pictures and then emailing them to people.

What I wouldn't give to know what the Seattle traffic conditions are right now on my phone! How I long to text message with abandon!!

Those were good times I tell you, and I remember then fondly.

It feels as if my phone has been eviscerated, now merely a shell of the multi-purpose gadget she once was. All the icons on her screen reveal potential to do so much more! It is my fault that now, she is just a phone. I underestimated her worth to me.

What's especially sad about this arrangement is that I'm paying the exact same amount I was paying before we left for the trip, yet now I only get 1/3 of the service.
